Franz Josef Land

Franz Josef Land is an archipelago located in the Arctic Ocean, Barents Sea and Kara Sea in 1300 kilometers from Murmansk and in 900 kilometers from the North Pole.

It consists of 191 islands, which cover an area of 16,134 square kilometers, stretching 375 kilometers from east to west and 234 kilometers from north to south.

Franz Josef Land is a nature sanctuary of Arctic wild life: bird cliffs, walrus colonies, polar bears, arctic foxes, marine mammals and historical remains. The islands became part of the Russian Arctic National Park in 2012 with a limited visitors policy.
